Sacramento authorities are examining a shooting that took place Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park at the moment officers were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
Background
Sacramento County law enforcement initially responded to the park on Howe Avenue around 6:30 Saturday evening after getting calls of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made mentioning an alleged brawl unfolding within the park grounds.
An overhead unit was sent to survey the area but was unable to locate the reported altercation. However, deputies found that an enormous crowd had assembled at the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Dispersal and Shooting
Responding units began the process of clearing the park by surrounding the park and issuing commands over loudspeakers ordering the crowd to disperse at once. Roughly 15 minutes were provided for the crowd to leave.
At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots were discharged. The rapid succession of shots caused mass panic. Law enforcement at once began looking for those injured.
The Shooting Victims
In total, four individuals were located with gunshot injuries. The four individuals — including a female and three males all reportedly in their early to late twenties — were brought to area medical facilities. What Investigators Found
The bulk of the shooting seemed to have occurred along the Cottage Way corridor next to the Home Depot on the 2200 Howe Avenue block. CSI personnel located additional shell casings along Cottage Way. Bullet damage were noted in the wrought iron fence alongside the Home Depot store. These findings confirmed that at least one shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area aimed at the Home Depot. The store itself was put under lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives stayed at the location late into the evening.
Arrests Made
Information obtained through scanner monitoring confirmed that a suspect Kia was contacted by law enforcement in an area within Solano County. Four individuals were stopped and detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to transport the detainees for further questioning. Video evidence revealed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
